Cultural Heritage in the Pedirka Basin

Amanda Markham Consulting completed a cultural heritage survey in the eastern area of the Simpson Desert, on New Crown and Andado Stations. The survey was carried out under the Northern Territory Heritage Act.

The survey covered six sites over two days, with a number of Aboriginal stone tools, cores, and flakes being found. This area of the Simpson Desert is part of country belonging to the Lower Southern Arrernte (Anterkarinja) people, and has been occupied by Aboriginal people for up to 13,000 years. Over the past few years, the Simpson Desert has come under renewed interest from oil and gas exploration companies hoping to locate new and viable prospects.
